The Value of Self-Reflection✨

Self-reflection is essential to the growth of an individual. It is an exercise that we should all commit to to figure out our faults, mistakes, and spaces that need improvement. In this blog, I will analyze famous quotes from wise philosophers from both the East and the West, Socrates and Lao Tzu.

SOCRATES

As the infamous founder of Western philosophy, Socrates has
done many studies on the human mind and self-reflection.

The following are quotes of his that struck deep thought in many people:

"Know Thyself"

At least once in our lives, we have asked the question, "Who am I?". The discovery of self is invaluable. The key to happiness is being comfortable with yourself and the world. You cannot understand anything or anyone if you do not take the time to understand yourself first. Your mind will never be at peace, you will feel lost in society, and you will never be happy. So do something to find yourself, make yourself smile, and enjoy the company of your own skin.

"The Unexamined Life is Not Worth Living"

Our lives are a blessing that was bestowed on each and every one of us. Although it is abundant, each life is unique and different. Why sit around and live your life in solitude? Go out there and indulge your curiosity! Do what you love and take risks; time will not stop for you! It is a waste to throw life away when it has been so beautiful and kind to us. If your life is boring, then make it enjoyable! Don't be kept deep into the darkness of sadness; pull yourself out and find the light in life. Because if you stick around in the dull shallow waters, how will you discover the fish and corals in the ocean of abundance?

"Virtue is Knowledge of Good & Bad"

Good morals are what make good people. Knowing the difference between right & wrong, good & bad, evil & just, will bring us to higher, brighter places. We cannot improve ourselves if we do not have any idea of the path we are supposed to take. Wrong actions are what make us bad people. People are not born wrong; it is just that they are strayed the wrong way because they do not have any sense of virtue. This is why doing good is very important to being yourself.

LAO TZU

"Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom
Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power. "

Just like Socrates, Lao Tzu believed in the power of self-reflection. If you focus too much on the faults and flaws of others, how will you ever improve yourself? Being spiteful, arrogant, and judgmental won't get you anywhere. The key to happiness is your identity, the key to empowerment is your identity, and figuring out who you are is necessary.
